2. Prince Vasu's Marriage

The sage stayed in the palace for a day and then took his leave.  Manorama, too, was overjoyed to learn about Badrinath’s decision.  Vasudev thanked his Lord for giving him yet another moment to rejoice in his life.

Thereafter things began to shape fast.  In the next couple of months Prince Vasu not only got engaged with Pallavi but also tied the nuptial nod with her.  The marriage was conducted with great aplomb, fervor and on a very grand scale.  The guests that included Kings and noted dignitaries of various kingdoms were treated to delicious delicacies and all care was taken to make them feel at ease.  Witnessing the marriage proceedings Vasudev had reminiscence of the first birthday of the Prince where he was dressed as Lord Krishna himself.  He remembered taking the Prince in his arms and landing a kiss on his forehead.  Now that same Prince had not only grown into a charming youth but was also getting married!  How time flew, he wondered!  He prayed to God to bless the young couple with a long and happy life.

Bharadwaj had sent a special invitation to Shiva so that Vasudev got an opportunity to spend time with all his friends.  Shiva informed Vasudev that Chakrabandhava had regretted his actions before him.  Shiva had tears in his eyes as he effusively thanked Vasudev for his efforts.  Vasudev hugged him and said humbly, “It is all the work of the Lord, my dear friend.  Thank him and not me!”

A notable event which occurred during this occasion was the meeting of Vasudev with his friend turned foe, King Chandravarkar.  As Vasudev looked around in the grand marriage hall, he found the King sitting alone in his opposite direction.  Taking the opportunity, Vasudev took an empty seat beside him and slowly began conversing with him.

Chakrabandhava, the brother of Sage Badrinath, often coerced his ruler to mend ties with Vasudev ever since he had met the latter.  Although Chandravarkar agreed it was the all familiar ‘let-him-approach-me-first’ ego which prevented him from making any positive move in this direction.  With Vasudev now taking the initiative to break the impasse that ego got shattered and the King had no option but to respond affirmatively.  With the passage of time the tension eased among them considerably and Chandravarkar found himself chatting with his one-time friend in the same ease and comfort like the days of yore.  This was yet another instance which showed the purity and limpidness of Vasudev’s heart.

Manorama who had accompanied Vasudev thoroughly enjoyed the event.  She was very pleased to meet her father, Sage Amulya, with whom she was engaged in confabulation for a long time.  Amulya was relieved to see the visible improvement in his daughter’s health.  He was certain that it was due to her marriage with Vasudev that good fortune was showering its warm grace on her.

Vasudev also got the opportunity to meet Dushantha, the son of Somaiya.  The young Prince was elegant and had a very innocent face that made his diabolic nature hard to believe.  He appeared quite contented with his sister’s marriage with Vasu.  It was the efforts of his father, Somaiya, that had quelled his initial reaction of protest and made him agree to this relationship.  Vasudev prayed for the happiness of the Prince.  He hoped that with growing age and wisdom the Prince would learn to control his temper.

Finally, the marriage was over!  Everyone headed home very satisfied with the proceedings.  Bharadwaj thanked Vasudev for his efforts to yet again bring happiness to his family.

“It was my duty.”  Vasudev humbly replied.  They hugged each other tightly as a parting gesture.  Thereby, offering their blessings to the new couple Vasudev and Manorama returned to Chandrapur.
