-11. Vasudev Accepts Boon of Death

Manorama grasped the essence of her King’s philosophy. 

Just then, his friends came over and with visible unease acknowledged his wish of accepting the boon of the Lord.  Vasudev thanked them with gratitude.  He, thereby, made everyone gather in his chamber and expressed the desire to ask his Lord for the boon.  Rishabd came forward with a request, “For my sake, please ask God to not let anything happen to you immediately after you grant this boon to someone.  May you survive for a few more days so that I can spend that some more time with you!  The Lord should not be having any objection for, after all, you are granting your complete lifespan to the chosen person!”

All those present had tears welling up their eyes on hearing Risbabd speak thus. 

“Okay, my child!  I will request him but then it is his choice!”  Vasudev intoned.

Thereafter, all of them left leaving the erstwhile ruler alone.  He sat in a meditating posture and fixed his mind on Lord Krishna.  In a short while, the Lord made his appearance in all his majestic and glorious form.  Vasudev took his blessings and then Krishna said shaking his head in admiration, “So you managed to convince your family!”

“I only put the facts before them, My Lord!  It is entirely to their credit that they agreed!”  Vasudev replied humbly and put forward the request of his son. 

Smiling at him fervidly, Lord Krishna agreed, “So be it!  You will survive for ten more days after granting the boon to someone.  I will give two months’ time within which you will have to find the suitable person failing which the boon would become redundant and you will continue to lead the life that fate has decided for you.”

Vasudev agreed and then the Lord placed his hand on his devotee’s head.  A bright yellow light engulfed Vasudev for a few moments.  As this happened the Lord closed his tranquil eyes for a few moments and then slowly opened it as the glow faded away.  “There you are, Vasudev!  This boon is yours!”

Vasudev who was experiencing great bliss during this process thanked the Lord who blessed him and then disappeared.
